What Is A Ute?

Utah finished second in the Associated Press Poll and fourth in the Coaches’ Poll.  I’m not sure which is more of a joke.  I can understand the press succumbing to peer pressure, but the coaches should know better than to rank such an undeserving team so high.

I supposed if enough idiots declare that you must rank an undefeated team over a two loss team that it beat, then you have to do it.  But that’s voting based on the cries of the people instead of on actual fact.  Because the fact is, Utah is not as good as Alabama.

Yes, I saw the game and the score.  But that doesn’t tell the full story.  Alabama had nothing to play for.  If they blew out Utah, it would be exactly what everyone was expecting.  It was a let-down game for them, a contractually obligated appearance that they would have just as soon ignored in order to recover from the wounds suffered from navigating the regular season gauntlet of an SEC schedule undefeated.  The Crimson Tide had already played in the real national championship game against Florida.  As runners-up, they were presented with a gift horse that had no teeth.

There’s also the fact that they were playing without offensive linesman Andre Smith, reportedly because one of his family members made contact with an agent, an agent I wouldn’t be surprised to learn resides within the state of Utah.  No one knew exactly how valuable Smith was until this game.  He’s obviously the difference between a couple of sacks and eight sacks.

To all of you fools declaring Utah a good team…what is your proof?  You can’t use the defeat over Alabama because I’ve already explained that.  What does that leave you with?  An undefeated season in the Mountain West?  The Mountain West!

This is a conference that tried to proclaim how great it was by touting its 5-0 regular season record against the PAC-10.  As if that’s something to brag about.  If USC only played 5 PAC-10 teams a season, even Pete Carroll could probably get through unscathed.  (I’m sure I’ll regret saying that later.)

Sure, they went 5-0 in their bowl games, but look who they played.  Cal picked on a Miami team that was without its starting quarterback.  Oregon snuck by a deflated Oklahoma State team that would have been in a BCS game if there wasn’t a limit on the number of teams per conference.  Oregon State only scored 3 points against a Big East team.  Arizona beat BYU, a team from the Mountain West conference, which I’ve already established isn’t very good.  And finally, USC’s coordinators had their way with JoePa’s Nittany Lions, resulting in another pyrric vicotry for the Trojans.

There’s only one thing more ridiculous than Utah’s high ranking, and that’s the fact that USC made the top five once again by being nothing more than mediocre against a schedule of bottom feeders.
