Pete Angry

Time for some multiple choice.  Pete Carroll’s behavior at Mark Sanchez’s press conference was:

A)childish

B)rude

C)self-serving

D)exactly what we at Pete’s On The Hot Seat have come to expect from the man

The answer, of course, is all of the above.

Like a bratty kid at a grocery store craving sugary junk food only to have his rational mother take it away from his greedy hands, Carroll threw a hissy-fit when he didn’t get his way.  But in this case, the spectators weren’t just a few helpless patrons forced to awkwardly watch the events play out as the child pounded his fist on the dirty linoleum floor in front of their shopping carts.  No, the whole world was shopping at this Albertson’s.

Carroll looked a lot like he did after each of his SEVEN losses over the past six seasons: confused as to how such an event could have occurred despite being entirely to blame.  And once again, he tried to shift that blame to someone else, in this case claiming that Sanchez “wasn’t ready.”

We’re not arguing that Sanchez would likely benefit from another year as USC’s quarterback.  Having to constantly overcome the limitations of your head coach (one who enjoys reigning in the offense, no less) builds a steely determinism that aids one greatly in the turbulent land of the NFL.  But the undue media attention lavished upon Mr. Temper Tantrum means that any success Sanchez created would be unjustly credited to the (figure)head coach.

Short of winning a national championship (don’t hold your breath), Sanchez had nowhere to go but down next season.  Meanwhile, Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, and Tim Tebow will only get better.  (Not sure if that’s humanly possible for Tebow, but Urban Meyer has been known to do what isn’t possible.)

The real reason Carroll doesn’t want Sanchez to go is that it leaves his team in a dire situation.  None of the supporting staff have proven themselves capable of shaping one of USC’s three 5-star quarterbacks into a player who can manage a football game.  Mitch Mustain could probably be the guy given his 8-0 record as a starter in the SEC, but Carroll failed to give him quality playing time last season, an error that burns especially bright with the departure of Sanchez.

A real man would have graciously thanked Sanchez for bailing him out game after game and wished him the best of luck, knowing full well how much he would thrive away from his oppression.  But Carroll is more than that.

He’s a real desperate man.
